Children First ProgramChild

The Children First Program uses a best practices curriculum developed by the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACoA.)  This program provides supportive education for children that helps these children heal and recover from the family disease of addiction. During the six-one and a half hour sessions, the Children First Program will utilize materials designed especially for elementary and middle school children who have lived in addictive households. Children learn:

  • About addiction as a family disease
  • About parent problems that might lead to addiction
  • To talk about their experiences and feelings
  • About resilience they have developed as a result of their experiences
  • That they also need and deserve support and help

This program offers the opportunity for families to break the cycle of addiction. Without an effective intervention program, children of alcoholics and of drug addicts will be impaired developmentally, socially and psychologically and the cycle of addiction will continue.

Originally offered by Compass for children at Casa de los Ninos Crisis Center with outstanding success, the Children First Program came to the attention of personnel at Child Protective Services (CPS) and the Family Drug Court. Compass is now working with the Family Drug Court to truly make a difference in the lives of the children of Family Drug Court parents. The next step is envisioned to be collaborations with group homes, other family programs and foster care programs state-wide.
