Entering DetoxClient in Group

Entering into detoxification is a brave and important first step on the path to recovery. Here at Compass, we are aware of the questions and concerns you may have before making this vital decision.

Some common concerns of persons entering Desert Hope Detoxification for the first time:

Am I eligible for Detox?

You are eligible if you are currently enrolled in the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) or are eligible for AHCCCS. If you do not know your eligibility status, please contact us and we can assist you in finding out.

Everyone who comes in to Compass is welcome to an assessment and referral to the appropriate program or provider, if needed.

Can I afford detoxification treatment?

Yes! The cost of most other treament programs is beyond the reach of most families. NOT OURS!

Compass will complete a financial eligibility screening for all clients to determine individual cost. We follow the AHCCCS co-pay schedules and there may be a small, manageable co-pay for treatment.

Some of our other services, such as Outpatient treatment, are available for self-pay on a sliding scale.

How long does the program last?

While every person's treatment plan is individually created to best fit their own needs, average length of stay at Desert Hope is around 2-3 days.

Will I be forced to stay if I don't want to?

No. All detoxification services at Desert Hope are 100% voluntary. While Compass would certainly encourage all clients to see detoxification treatment through to completion, and hopefully continue on with a residential or outpatient treatment program thereafter, we recognize that every person knows what is best for themselves at any given moment and are free to make their own care decisions.

I have received Desert Hope's detoxification services in the past and have relapsed. Can I still receive services?

We understand that relapse is often a normal part of recovery. Prior enrollment in Compass' services does not preclude anyone from receiving the help they need.

Is detox care private?

All services provided at Desert Hope Detoxification are completely comfidential and covered under CFR-42, Part 2. Under federal regulations no-one has access to a client's information without having been given specific signed release.

Can my family be involved with my treatment?

If clients are interested, Compass allows them to involve their loved ones and family members in the recovery process. Realizing that addiction touches all aspects of a person's life, our Adult Recovery Team can provide solutions for treatment options that bring together more aspects of a client's support network than traditional methods.

That being said, due to concerns about client confidentiality, no Compass staff member will ever confirm or deny a client's involvement with our services, should we recieve a telephone call for that client. This means that while we can take messages from friends and family members to pass along to a client, we cannot directly connect them to that person. Client phones are provided for calls out.

Additionally, while our residential programs do offer options for visitation, the intense, short-term, focused nature of treatment at Desert Hope Detoxification means that on-site visitations are not allowed.

What should I bring with me to Desert Hope Detoxification?

Most everything at Desert Hope is provided for clients while they are in treatment, such as meals, toiletries and clothing. Clients are allowed to bring any necessary medication with a valid prescription from a doctor.

What will happen during my first few hours at Desert Hope?

After registration, all clients will go through an initial triage wherein they will be given a medical and psychological assessment and be given a urine test and/or a breathalyzer test to establish a baseline. Clients will continue to remain in extended triage for a period of time while their vitals are monitored and they are observed for any abnormal symptoms. After triage, clients are placed in a bed and all treatment plans are individually created.

What can I expect to be some of the effects of detoxification?

While everyone's experience of withdrawal is different, some common symptoms may include:

  • sweating
  • shaking
  • headache
  • drug craving
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • abdominal cramping
  • diarrhea
  • inability to sleep
  • confusion
  • agitation
  • depression
  • anxiety and other behavioral changes

What happens after detox?

During a client's stay at Desert Hope, staff will work with them to develop a plan that best fits their needs. Some clients may benefit best from a residential treatment program, such as our New Directions program or other local options. Some may seek out a less structured sober living environment. Others may find outpatient treatment their best option for relapse prevention. Compass staff will work to make sure that no-one who wants continuing care and addiction treatment will be on their own.
